 Dear School Community,

We had a great first full week of school. Students and staff have settled into classroom routines and the beautiful September weather cooperated with us this week. Today, 5th and 6th graders spent the day in the woods with instructors from Nature's Classroom. They participated in team building, creating shelters and mino- catapults, and built mini civilizations.  Many thanks to Nature's Classroom for this phenomenal experience and to the 5th and 6th grade team for working to make this happen safely for our students.

Last night, the Shutesbury School Committee voted unanimously to require masks outdoors, specifically at recess. Starting today, students will be asked to wear masks outdoors, particularly at recess. We will of course continue to offer ample mask breaks for all of our students.

We are looking for two (2) parent/guardian representatives to serve on our SES School Council. This is not the School Committee. The School Council is made up of staff, parents/guardians, community members and the principal. The staff has elected two (2) staff members to serve on the council. This means that we are looking for two (2) guardians.

Definition of School Council from DESE:

The school council, including the school principal, shall meet regularly and shall assist in the identification of the educational needs of the students attending the school, make recommendations to the principal for the development, implementation and assessment of the curriculum accommodation plan required pursuant to section 38Q1/2, shall assist in the review of the annual school budget and in the formulation of a school improvement plan.

The School Council's main responsibility is to assist in the creation of a School Improvement Plan. The Shutesbury Elementary School Council will meet virtually once a month from 4:00-5:00pm. The dates of the meetings are as follows:

 October 12, November 16, December 14, January 11, February 8, March 8, April 12, May 9 and June 7.

If you are interested in serving on the SES School Council, please submit an email to me  (mendonsaj@shutesburyschool.org)  stating your interest by Wednesday, September 22. If we have more than 2 people interested in the positions, we will have to have an election. I will inform the community of this process if it needs to happen.

I am happy to share that our school water has been tested by Housatonic Basin Sampling and Testing. The good news is that all five (5) samples tested well within the guidelines of State and Federal regulations and deemed safe for consumption. We have posted the report from the water testing on our website for your review.

The PTO is selling mums again this year.  Please read the attached flyer and consider purchasing some beautiful mums while showing support for SES.

 Have a great weekend,

Jackie

****Stay Connected with the Student Directory!****

Every year the PTO puts together a Student Directory so that parents and students can stay connected. All the information you need for playdates and parties is in one convenient place! It is very handy. If you would like your child’s contact information in the Student Directory, you must go to the directory website and enter your child’s information. The web address is https://ses-directory.org/ Please enter your information by September 26th.

If you have any questions, please contact me by email [email protected] or phone 413-336-1616.

Thank you,

Melissa

The school year is off to a great start with many classrooms making use of our track in the upper field. Although we have not organized an official Moose on the Move Walking/Running club like we have had in the past, we encourage all staff and students to rack up "moose miles" by taking time each week to walk or run on the track during school hours. Teachers can report the amount of laps completed by students to Nurse Katie who will record them in our software system. Students and staff can earn prizes for milestones they've completed! We encourage participation and competition with oneself rather than with others. This is a great way for students to learn healthy habits and begin to understand how exercise can increase energy levels, stamina and positivity. Keep racking up those miles!

RM

REMINDER:

When writing checks, please be sure to make them out to “Town of Shutesbury” and then in the memo line you can write in what it is for i.e., “Moose Lodge Club” or “Strings program” etc.
