Grades 5/6 Return in Hybrid Learning Mode

January 15, 2021

Dear Moose Community,

We are heading into our final 2 weeks of January! After consultation with the Board of Health, SES will resume hybrid learning for grades PK, K, 1st and 2nd grade on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. For those younger students choosing hybrid learning, the morning schedule will remain the same as in December. Students can be dropped off at 8:30 am. Kindergarten begins dismissal at 11:20. First grade begins dismissal at 11:25, and second grade dismisses at 11:30.

We have sent a survey to the 5th and 6th grade families regarding choosing hybrid or remote learning for their child. At this moment in time, our results are exactly 50/50. Half the students in both classes chose remote and half chose hybrid. The 5th/6th grade team is meeting to figure out how we can support all of our students in these settings. We will be communicating our ideas to the community next week during our informational meeting on January 20th at 6:30 pm. Families of 5th and 6th graders will be sent an invitation and link to join us for this meeting. I STRONGLY encourage all 5th and 6th grade families to attend, regardless of the mode of learning you chose for your student, as this shift will impact all of our learners.

All students and staff have Monday off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. So much turmoil is happening in our world and our country right now. It seems like this day of observance falls at just the right time for all of us to spend some time reflecting on the state of our country and remember the words and teachings of one of our most influential teachers, Dr. King.

"Darkness can not drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate can not drive out hate; only love can do that." ~MLK

***SCHOOL NEWS***

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is removing the requirement for flu vaccination for attendance in childcare/preschool, primary, secondary and postsecondary education. Preliminary data show that this has been a mild flu season to date, presumably as people have received their seasonal flu vaccine and have been adhering to mask-wearing and social distancing due to COVID-19.  Given the intensive Commonwealth-wide efforts regarding COVID-19 vaccination, DPH wants to alleviate the burden to obtain flu vaccination and focus on continuing our COVID -19 vaccination efforts.

DPH continues to strongly recommend that everyone age six months and older receive their seasonal flu vaccine each year.
