NO SCHOOL.  Indigenous Peoples Day

October 2, 2020

October is upon us! Over the last 2 weeks, I have watched the trees along the S curves change and GLOW. Over the course of 3 days I saw them turn from vibrant green to glowing yellow and hints of red. My daily rides along the S curves are some of my favorite parts of the day. This is my seventh (!!) fall driving on them daily. It is beautiful to watch the seasons change along that route!

Starting on Monday October 5th, we will begin full days of remote learning. Most teachers are attempting to keep the afternoons fairly asynchronous. We are deliberately doing this so that you can continue to find social and outdoor opportunities for your children and so that you can have some flexibility in your schedules. We have gotten a LOT of positive feedback on starting off with the half day schedule. Students have gotten more stamina and a greater understanding of the platform and are ready for longer days.

Specials will begin on Monday. The specialists are putting a LOT of time and effort into asynchronous lessons. Students will be able to access their special links through their google classrooms. Many of the specialists are also doing live pop-ins to classrooms in the morning time.

Some classrooms are having some brief meeting times in the afternoons, and some teachers are holding some small group lessons then. Please communicate with your child's teacher around any questions for the afternoons.

Next Friday, October 9 was originally scheduled as a Curriculum Day, but instead we will have a full school day from 8:30am-3pm.  Next Friday will be a regular school day.

I have gotten several inquiries about Amherst's recent postponement of in-person learning and if that is going to affect our plans at SES at all. The School Committee will meet to discuss the health and safety data in the surrounding areas and make a decision about our plan moving forward at the end of this month into early November. Until then, we are continuing with our remote learning plan.

I hope you enjoy a beautiful Autumn weekend!

***SCHOOL NEWS***

*INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONS:  See attached flyers and registrations from Brian Bender (Band for Grades 4-6) and Tyson Peelle (Orchestra for Grades 2-6).

*ATTENDANCE INFO – Teachers will be taking attendance this year so it is important that your student participates in their live meets and turns in their asynchronous work in Google Classrooms.  If your child will be absent from remote learning, please let the classroom teacher know, as well as the office – [email protected] or 413-259-1212x0.  If we do not hear from you when your child is not present, we will follow up with a call home.  Thank you!

*VIRTUAL HEALTH OFFICE – Nurse Katie has a Virtual Health Office on the school website!  Check it out HERE or from the home page under UPCOMING EVENTS.

*LUNCH INFO - Just a reminder that free meals are available for anyone in your household under 18 years of age.  This program will last until December of 2020 or until funding runs out.  We are packing breakfast and lunch and distributing curbside pick-up in the school parking lot on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 until 5.

The lunch menu is on our website.  We are asking that people sign up for the month and agree to pick food up in a specific time slot on every distribution day.  The food is made specifically for your family and includes granola, yogurt, fresh bread, milk, juice, fruit, some veggies and pizza, and of course oven ready lunches.  Please email Chef Gail:  [email protected] with any questions or to sign up.

*RETURNING FORMS – In your materials pick up, you should have received a pocket folder with school information and forms.  Please return these forms to school either via email (if there is no personal information on them), snail mail, or drop folders off at school in the lobby between 7am and 4pm, Monday – Friday.  Thank you for your attention to this!

*TECH HELP – If you or your student need help with school devices or Google Classrooms, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Tech Coordinator, Debbie Lee, [email protected] or your classroom teacher.

Stay Connected with the Student Directory!

Every year the PTO puts together a Student Directory so that parents and students can stay connected. All the information you need for (virtual) playdates and parties is in one convenient place! It is very handy. If you would like your child’s contact information in the Student Directory, you must go to the web site and enter your child’s information. The web address is https://ses-directory.org/ Please enter your information soon!  There is an extended submission deadline, but please submit in a timely manner

If you have any questions, please contact me by email [email protected] or phone 413-336-1616.

Thank you, Melissa

Moose on the Move

is back!!!

We invite our Moose to join us once again along with the 100 Mile Club™ to “Rack” up running or walking laps to earn prizes and get healthy

The beautiful fall weather is here. Let’s get outside and log our miles to earn incentive prizes and engage in healthy activities while we are all sitting more than usual.

Moose on the Move will have to look a little different this school year. Students will start remotely from home sending in their miles to Nurse Katie. When in school-learning begins students will be taken to the track by class to get some laps in during movement breaks/outside time. Families are welcome to use the track at SES during remote learning as long as social distancing rules are followed.

There will be no charge for the first session.
